In 2004 the first competition among American students in the field of Synthetic Biology was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This competition rapidly expanded worldwide and today international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) is the most prestigious student competition with over 300 teams from the leading universities around the globe. Over the summer students are designing projects which are then evaluated in November at MIT.
